How to use Custom Instructions in ChatGPT
At the time of writing for this article, this feature is only available to Chatgpt Plus users (20$/month) and users in USA/Canada/United Kingdom (easily resolved with a VPN if you’re living somewhere else).
Step 1: Go to “Settings & Beta” > “Beta Features” and activate “Custom instructions“
Step 2: Go to “Custom instructions“
Step 3: Add your custom Personal Information and Response Preferences and select “Enable for new chat“

This is a game changer. Before Chatgpt would forget our instructions after a long chat. Now it always stay on point!
Still there’s some limition. first you can “only” add 1500 tokens for each part of the custom instructions. Can become limited quite fast if you want to add a full client avatar for a business of a full AI persona like in my example.
Also you can only create one custom instructions. It would be better if we could create multiple custom instructions and select the one we want to use in a new chat.
But it seems you can change your custom instructions before creating a new chat, and the old one will stay for the chats created before, while the new custom intructions will be used for the new chats.
About the API:
If you use the chatGPT API, you could already send custom instructions in the role’ => ‘system’ part.
With the API & Playground you’re not limited to 1500 + 1500 tokens, you could send a custom intruction of 5000 tokens if you want, but do note that it’s part of the whole call to the model. So if you use a model with 8,192 tokens you won’t have much for the ‘role’ => ‘user’ & answer.
