Introduction to the new 5.2 version
With the release of Midjourney 5.2, the platform takes a significant leap forward, introducing a host of new features that promise to redefine the user experience.
From enhanced aesthetics and streamlined prompt optimization to the revolutionary “Zoom Out” feature that offers boundless creative freedom, Midjourney 5.2 is set to transform the way we interact with AI in our creative journey.
Let’s dive in!
1/ Zoom Out (Outpainting)
The Outpainting feature, also known as “Zoom Out,” is a significant addition to Midjourney 5.2.
This feature allows users to expand the scope of their generated images, creating a broader context or environment around the central subject.
It’s like taking a step back and seeing the bigger picture.
This feature opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for image generation, allowing for more comprehensive and immersive scenes.
How to use it?
First you’ll have to create an image, then upscale one of the result.
portrait of a japanese warrior samouaraï on colorful background, hyperrealistic photography, 8k, close - up shot, close - up photo, sony a7r IV --ar 16:9 --s 750 --style raw

Then I choose the Make Square option:

I then upscaled the number 2 and choosed Zoom Our 2x:

Then I upscaled again and used Custom Zoom so I could change the aspect ratio to 16:9

The Custom Zoom feature is really powerfull, you can also change the prompt!

Zoom Out has quickly become my top pick among the new features, filling a significant gap in Midjourney’s capabilities. Countless times, I found myself resorting to alternative tools to accomplish outpainting tasks.
Now, with this feature integrated into Midjourney, the process is more streamlined and efficient than ever.
2/ New /shorten command
Midjourney 5.2 introduces the /shorten command, a handy tool that helps users optimize their prompts.
This command allows users to condense their prompts without losing the essence of their ideas, making the AI’s interpretation more accurate and efficient.
It’s a great tool for refining your prompts and getting the most out of the AI’s capabilities.
How does it work?
Let’s say you created (maybe with the help of ChatGPT and the photorealistic plugin) a crazy big prompt:
A portrait of a beautiful girl, rendered in ultra-realistic detail against a stark white background. Her features should be intricately detailed, with a high-resolution 16k quality capturing every nuance. The lighting should be bright and even, illuminating her features and casting a soft shadow on the background. The colors should be rich and lifelike, with the girl's skin tones contrasting with the white background. The composition should be a medium shot, with the girl's upper body in the frame. The camera used should be a high-end DSLR, with a narrow depth of field to focus on the girl and blur the background. The style should be photo hyper-realistic, with a high level of detail and a realistic color palette. --ar 16:9 --style raw --q 2 --s 750
I’ll use the /shorten command:

Now we know how the AI will analyse our prompt. If you click on show details, you’ll have even more data:

Let’s use the first one:
portrait of a beautiful girl, rendered in ultra-realistic detail against a stark white background. Her features should be intricately detailed, resolution 16k quality capturing, nuance. The lighting, illuminating, soft shadow --ar 16:9 --style raw --q 2 --s 750

3/ New “High Variation Mode”
The new High Variation Mode is another exciting feature of Midjourney 5.2.
This mode allows users to generate a wider range of image variations from a single prompt.
It’s perfect for those times when you’re looking for diverse interpretations of your idea or when you’re in the mood for some creative exploration.
It should be selected by default. But if you want to check, type /settings

Then in each image you create, after upscalling, you also have the ability to choose is you want to make new variation with a subtle or strong difference.

Strong VS Subtle:

4/ New Aesthetic System
Midjourney 5.2 also introduces a new aesthetic system.
This system enhances the AI’s ability to understand and generate images based on aesthetic concepts. Whether you’re looking for something minimalist, surreal, or baroque, the new aesthetic system can help bring your artistic vision to life. Here’s what they posted in the annoucement channel:
— Improved aesthetics & sharper images
— Improved coherence & prompt text understanding
Another big update is how –stylize works :
“We’re seeing a lot of people have a hard time porting V5.0/V5.1 prompts to V5.2 if they’re using high --stylize values. If you used --stylize in V4/V5.0/V5.1 you may need to re-adjust your numbers for V5.2. Try reducing it by much as 5x. Meaning --stylize 1000 V5/V5.1 should be a --stylize 200 prompt for V5.2.”
So as you can read, stylize will be way stronger than before. By the way the defauult value is 100.
Let’s do some tests:
The king of the spade kingdom, fantasy, 1940s animation, painting, colorful --ar 3:2
–stylize 200

–stylize 500

–stylize 1000
